What is Live-in Care?

Live-in care is a type of home care where a professional carer moves into your home to provide continuous support, 24 hours a day. Unlike visiting care where carers come for scheduled appointments, a live-in carer is always present, ready to assist whenever you need help.

For many people, leaving their home for a residential care facility is deeply unsettling. Your home is filled with memories, familiar surroundings and a sense of belonging that cannot be replicated elsewhere. Live-in care offers a genuine alternative, enabling you to stay connected to your community while receiving the support you need.

At Arthur Morrison Care Services, our live-in carers become a trusted part of your household. They provide practical assistance with daily tasks, companionship, reassurance and genuine human connection.

Reduced Health Risks

Research shows people receiving care at home have fewer falls and lower infection rates compared to residential settings.

Who Can Benefit from Live-in Care?

Elderly Individuals Needing Daily Support

If age related conditions make daily tasks difficult, live-in care provides support while allowing you to remain independent. Our carers help with personal care, mobility, meals, medication and household tasks.

  • Those who find visiting care no longer meets their needs
  • People who feel unsafe living alone
  • Individuals wanting to avoid moving to a care home
  • Those recovering from hospital who need ongoing support

People Living with Dementia

Familiar surroundings are particularly important for people with dementia. Live-in care allows your loved one to remain in the home they know, with consistent routines and a dedicated carer who understands their needs.

  • Consistent daily routines to reduce confusion
  • Memory prompts and gentle reminders
  • Safety monitoring and fall prevention
  • Meaningful activities and cognitive stimulation
  • Support for family carers

Couples with Different Care Needs

When partners have different requirements, a single live-in carer can support both, allowing them to remain together rather than facing separation.

  • Stay together in your family home
  • One carer supporting both partners
  • More cost effective than two care home places
  • Maintain your relationship and shared life

Those Recovering from Illness or Surgery

After a hospital stay, live-in care bridges the gap during recovery, providing assistance to regain strength and independence.

  • Post operative care and wound monitoring
  • Medication management
  • Mobility assistance and physiotherapy support
  • Meal preparation for nutritional recovery
  • Gradual reduction of care as independence returns

Understanding Live-in Carer Arrangements

Working Patterns

Live-in carers typically work on a rotational basis. A common arrangement is four to six weeks with you, followed by one to two weeks off during which a replacement carer provides continuity.

Daily Breaks

Live-in carers are entitled to a daily break of around two hours, usually in the afternoon. Depending on your needs, you may be comfortable alone or we can arrange visiting carer cover.

Replacement Carers

When your primary carer takes their break, we provide a replacement who has been briefed on your care plan. We try to use a small pool of familiar faces.

What Your Carer Needs

A private bedroom (a small spare room is fine), access to washing and bathroom facilities, an internet connection for care monitoring, and a weekly food allowance or shared meals.

What Families Say About Our Live-in Care

"When Mum came out of hospital, she was adamant she did not want a care home. Live-in care from Arthur Morrison was the perfect solution. Her carer has become like family. Mum is happier than she has been in years, still in her own home, still seeing her neighbours. We cannot thank the team enough."
